Antique Victorian 18ct Gold Enamel & Pearl Star Pendant
A Victorian pendant, made of 18ct gold with royal blue enamel and a large pearl.
The oval shaped pendant is engraved with eight-pointed star in the center. The star frames a single pearl. To the back side is an empty compartment to store a picture, note or even a lock of hair.
Starting from the 19th century, lockets became the symbol of romance and Victorian women started to wear lockets to carry their loved ones’ photos and locks of hair with them. Queen Victoria herself was carrying Prince Albert's picture in her locket.
In the Portrait of a Lady, probably Lady Florence Emily Hesketh by Frederick Sandys (dated by Victoria & Albert Museum as late 1870s), a similar design locket can be seen.
